Diamond Grading
When it comes to diamonds, professionals in the industry rely on the grading system developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in the 1950s. This system established four important factors to describe and classify diamonds: Clarity, Colour, Cut, and Carat Weight. These factors, commonly referred to as the 4Cs, play a crucial role in determining the quality and value of a diamond.
Colour
The colour of a diamond is graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The less colour a diamond has, the higher its grade and value. Colourless diamonds allow more light to pass through, resulting in greater brilliance and sparkle.
Clarity
Clarity refers to the presence of internal and external characteristics, known as inclusions and blemishes, within a diamond. The GIA grades diamonds on a scale ranging from Flawless (no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification) to Included (inclusions and/or blemishes visible to the naked eye).
Cut
The cut of a diamond refers to how well it has been shaped and faceted. It is not to be confused with the shape of the diamond, which can vary (e.g., round, princess, emerald, etc.). The cut grade evaluates the diamond's ability to reflect and refract light, affecting its brilliance and overall beauty.
Carat Weight
Carat weight measures the size of a diamond. One carat is equal to 200 milligrams. While carat weight is often associated with size, it is important to note that a diamond's cut can greatly impact its perceived size. A well-cut diamond can appear larger than a poorly cut diamond of the same carat weight.
It is important to understand that the 4Cs work together to determine a diamond's quality and value. For example, a diamond with a high carat weight may not be as valuable if it has poor clarity or colour. Similarly, a diamond with excellent clarity and colour may not be as brilliant if it has a subpar cut.
